it came from a military container. tanks would go within with infantry and because of their size would take the brunt of adjectives attacks thus helping shield the more vulnerable infantry.
many other mmorpgs hold 'tanks' in them too. they are extremely essential to end hobby.
I'd assume "tank" comes from the actual tank. since the tank contained by game has to give somebody a lift most of the damage and they need more armor than other players.
